The Bus Is Coming (also known as Ghetto Revenge) is a 1971 American drama film written by Horace Jackson. The film is directed by Wendell James Franklin and stars Mike B. Simms and Burl Bullock. Let's get in a time machine my soul brothers and sisters and take a trip back in time for an early 1970s "blaxploitation" flick. Can you dig it! Storyline: In Center City, bus service has been discontinued because of increased violence in the predominately black community. Most recently, Joe Mitchell, a black, non-violent civil rights leader was killed in his own home by an unknown assailant with no apparent motive. A young black soldier returns home to Los Angeles from combat in Vietnam to find out that his brother had been killed and uncovers a gang of racist cops. Angered, he joins a black nationalist group to take his revenge. Synopsis: Abruptly summoned back to his old Watts neighborhood while serving his tour of duty in Vietnam, young black soldier Mike Simm investigates his brother's recent death and discovers a gang of racist cops and becomes the unlikely voice of moderation between the enraged black militants who want to riot in the streets, and the violent white extremists who are just itching for a race war. Plot: The film is about the death of a prominent Black community member Joe Mitchell, who served on the school board. "The Black Fist," a local black power political organization wants to hold a rally in response to Mitchell's death because the "town must pay it's dues". Billy Mitchell, Joe's brother returns from the Vietnam War and investigates Joe's death. He becomes aware of a gang of racist cops and eventually joins The Black Fist group to seek revenge. Tagline: The MAN Can't Stop It! Don't Miss It! Trivia: Quentin Tarantino remembers seeing this at 8 years old, along with a Jim Brown film as a double feature, and laughing at the African American audience yelling back at the screen. Once Upon a Time... When We Were Colored is a 1996 American period drama film directed by Tim Reid and starring Al Freeman Jr., Phylicia Rashad and Leon. The screenplay was written by Paul W. Cooper. The film is based on Clifton Taulbert’s real life and his non-fiction book Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored. Based on Clifton Taulbert's memoir first published in 1989; this film is about his life experiences from his childhood in a small Mississippi town during the segregated 1950s to his emigration North in 1962 at the age of 17. Synopsis: A narrator tells the story of his childhood years in a tightly knit African American community in the deep south under racial segregation. Welcome to Glen Allan, Mississippi, 1946. Experience an America that remains only in the hearts and minds of those who were brought up in this small southern community. Lost in the sweat of the cotton fields and hidden in the juke joints of muddy water blues, the people of Glen Allan nurtured and protected each other while celebrating life to the fullest. In a time when the Ku Klux Klan terrorized the streets and "White Only" were the first words learned by African American children, Clifton was encouraged by the love and kinship of the tight-knit community to overcome the bigotry and intolerance of the South, allowing him to embark on an extraordinary journey. Quotes: Narrator: Everyone clung to the idea that if you worked hard, you get a piece of the American dream. Reception: Roger Ebert gave the movie four stars of four. At the 1997 NAACP Image Awards film received two nominations: for Outstanding Motion Picture, and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture (Phylicia Rashad). It also received American Black Film Festival Award for Best Film. The video has poor picture quality, but it is still a worthwhile viewing experience. We do not own the rights to any of this film. Black Hollywood is a 1984 feature documentary that explores the role of black actors, black directors and the black audience in American movies. it was shot entirely on location in Hollywood. Remember the early 80s - hip hop had just been born, break dancing filled clubs and streets and Eddie Murphy and late great Richard Pryor were the only two black stars making it. In an action-packed showcase of clips and interviews, Diahnne Abbott, Rosalind Cash and Alfre Woodard talk about negative stereotyping. Jim Brown, Vonetta McGee and D'Urville Martin come up with alternative solutions to the one-way-street that was "blaxploitation" and discuss new ways of advancing an independent black cinema. There is a rare interview with Lorenzo Tucker, the Black Valentino, about his career with Oscar Micheaux. Joel Fluellen and Vincent Tubbs tell memorable stories of what life was like for the few blacks working in Hollywood in the 50s and 60s (including Dorothy Dandridge). There is a marvelous speech by Sidney Poitier on accepting the Black Hall of Fame "oscar". Griffiths' Birth Of A Nation is panned. Grandmaster Flash and his "Message" is the theme tune and the writer Oscar Williams holds the whole show together with his advice to the creative outsider.
