Heat Wave is a 1990 American thriller-drama television film about the 1965 Los Angeles Watts Riots, directed by Kevin Hooks and starring Blair Underwood, Cicely Tyson, James Earl Jones, Margaret Avery, and David Strathairn. On August 11, 1965, a routine traffic stop on a summer night sparks years of frustration within Los Angeles' African American community into a race riot that shocks the United States. A rookie black journalist investigates the tensions of the Watts section of Los Angeles in the bloody summer of 1965. A superb depiction of the Watts riot and how it possibly started in great detail. Storyline: The events that led to the 1965 race riots in Watts, Los Angeles, are covered by a black messenger-turned-reporter at the L.A. Times, as he was one of the first correspondents to arrive at the scene. The movie also follows the troubled times he, his family and friends went through in one of the most tense and sad moments in American history. Review: The Watts ghetto uprising of 1965 is a proving ground for a young black journalist. Excellent cast and fine script portray the anger and frustration of blacks in Los Angeles and the U.S. in the 1960s and the fear of change felt by blacks and whites when civil rights reform began. Strong drama with minimal emotionalism. We do not own the rights to any of this film. This film is being used for historical and educational purposes only. No copyright infringement intended. The Landlord is a 1970 American comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby, adapted by Bill Gunn from the 1966 novel by Kristin Hunter. The film stars Beau Bridges in the lead role of a privileged and ignorant white man who selfishly becomes the landlord of an inner-city tenement, intending to evict the occupants, unaware that the people he is responsible for are low-income, streetwise residents. Also in the cast are Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey, and Louis Gossett Jr. The film was Ashby's directorial debut. Plot: Naïve 29-year-old Elgar Enders buys a building in a black Brooklyn ghetto to evict the tenants and upgrade it. But instead, he grows fond of the tenants, especially a black woman married to a black radical, and falls in love with a mixed-race girl while his wealthy parents disapprove. Storyline: Elgar Enders, who lives off an allowance from his wealthy parents, buys an inner-city tenement in Park Slope, Brooklyn, which is undergoing gentrification, planning to evict the occupants and construct a luxury home for himself. (A one-man urban renewal project). However, once he ventures into the tenement, he grows fond of the low-income black residents. Enders decides to remain the landlord and help fix the building. He rebels against his WASP upbringing and, to his parents' dismay, romances a black woman and a biracial woman. Trivia: Charlie Murphy, older brother of Eddie Murphy, lived in the neighborhood where the film was shot, and he appears in a brief scene as a boy stealing Elgar's hubcaps. Historical Context: In the early seventies, Hollywood studio executives began to realize there was a huge untapped market for films dealing with Afro-Americans - a situation made obvious by the unexpected success of Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), an action-comedy film. In the ensuing rush to capture this previously ignored audience, the "blaxploitation" film was born, but the majority of these films were urban crime thrillers like Shaft (1971) and Superfly (1972). Films which attempted to explore racial issues or feature complicated black and white relationships were a rarity, but one unique exception was The Landlord (1970), which was virtually ignored by the public when it opened. Critical Reaction: The film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has received a 93% overall approval rating from 14 critics. Upon its release, New York Times film critic Howard Thompson, called the film "a wondrously wise, sad and hilarious comedy." On September 19, 2007, journalist Mike Hale discussed the film in a New York Times article called "Before Gentrification Was Cool, It Was a Movie". Hale praised the film for tackling the racial tension that arose in the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and wrote in surprise how the film "would disappear after its 1970 release – rarely shown and just as rarely discussed." Ogre - A vicious Ogre rules over a town that has been stuck in time since the 1800s. Ogre (2008) Director: Steven R. Monroe Writers: Chuck Reeves Stars: John Schneider, Ryan Kennedy, Katharine Isabelle Genre: Fantasy, Horror, Sci-Fi Country: Canada, United States Language: English Release Date: March 8, 2008 (United States) Filming Location: Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Reviews: I LOVE this movie and the first time I watched it I thought I’d hate it cause it didn’t look that good. And yeah the ogre looks really bad and it’s obviously a low budget movie but it’s just a lot of fun!! The characters are all great and the actors playing the town’s people from the 1800’s do a good job looking and sounding like they’re from another time. But this movie has a lot of Canadian charm to it and I love that about it. It’s got magic, an ogre, and a great Canadian cast, what more could you want. Welcome to the Men's Group - A men's support group descends into chaos when longstanding conflicts threaten the trust among the men. Welcome to the Men's Group (2016) Director: Joseph Culp Writers: Scott Ben-Yashar, Joseph Culp Stars: Phil Abrams, Vera Abrams, Mackenzie Astin Genre: Comedy, Drama Country: United States Language: English Release Date: June 18, 2016 (France) Filming Location: Los Angeles, California, USA Synopsis: This film takes us inside the intimate dynamic of an all-male support group when they gather one morning for a ritual breakfast and their unique form of male bonding. Reviews: "We rented this tonight thinking it was a straightforward comedy, but it's so much more than that. Huge props to the makers for exploring a side of maleness that we don't often see in film. When it started, I was sure it was a remake of a European film; we both agreed it "just wasn't" American. And it's not, at least it's not anything like any American film we've seen before. A bunch a men meet once a month to talk. "Check in," they call it. Twenty minutes in, I remarked "what a bunch of women." An hour in I realized that my statement was the definition of toxic masculinity! They start with superficial stuff, nothing special. But as the day wears on weaknesses are exposed and buried feelings come to the surface. We paused it several times to talk about what was going on, and how we saw it from our own gender perspective. It was a great conversation movie, and I think we learned a lot (at least about each other's experiences). Eye opening, sometimes seriously laugh out loud funny, sad, and brilliant. I hope more US filmmakers will take note and give us more films like this. As a woman, I found it fascinating, and it really really reminded me why I love men." - written by "horrorismyhome" on IMDb.com Also Known As (AKA): (original title) Welcome to the Men's Group Men's Group(Working Title) Australia Welcome to the Men's Group Canada Welcome to the Men's Group(English) France Welcome to the Men's Group United Kingdom Welcome to the Men's Group United States Welcome to the Men's Group ···················································································· SUPPORT US! ✘ Membership - FOLLOW US! ✘ X / ✘ TikTok / MORE MOVIES! ► Star Casts: ► Action: ► Drama: ► Thriller: ► All Playlists: ···················································································· COPYRIGHT: All of the films published by us are legally licensed.
