Cora Unashamed is a 2000 American made-for-television drama film from The American Collection directed by Deborah Pratt, starring Regina Taylor and Cherry Jones. The film was shot on location in October 1999 in central Iowa. Cities such as Ames, Cambridge and Story City were used. The movie is based on a short story by the same name in The Ways of White Folks, a 1934 collection of short stories by Langston Hughes. Cinematographer Ernest Holzman won an American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Award, for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Movies of the Week/Mini-Series'/Pilot for Network or Basic Broadcast TV, for his work on this film. David Herbert Donald called the short story "a brilliantly realized portrait of an isolated black woman in a small Middle Western town, who stoically survives her own sorrows, but in the end lashes out against the hypocrisy of the whites who employ her." Plot: A black servant (Regina Taylor) develops a close bond with her wealthy employers' daughter (Molly Graham) in 1930s Iowa. Storyline: Cora Jenkins and her parents are the only African-Americans in their community in 1920s Iowa, supported only by Cora's wages as housekeeper to the wealthy Studevants. When tragedy strikes, will Cora speak the truth... with consequences? Synopsis: This adaptation of Langston Hughes' powerful tale, set in the 1920s and 30s, tells the story of Cora Jenkins, the daughter of the only African-American family in the small Iowa town of Melton. Cora supports her mother and her daughter, Josephine, by working as a domestic in the home of the socially driven Mrs. Studevant, where she serves almost as a surrogate mother to the Studevants' daughter, Jessie. Cora's own daughter dies, and Cora's relationship with Jessie grows even deeper. When Jessie dies as a result of an abortion arranged by her mother and the latter lies about the cause to preserve her social standing, Cora must risk her livelihood, her security, and her place in the community in order to speak the truth and honor the memory of the child she loved and lost. Overview: An adaptation of a story by Langston Hughes that focuses on the stories of black and white families in 1916-31 Iowa. Cora, an African-American woman living in an all-white Iowa town in the 1930s, gives up her livelihood and security in order to speak the truth about the tragic deaths of two children she loved. Set in the 1930s, the story takes place in the tiny town of Melton, Iowa, where Cora Jenkins and her family live in isolation as the community's only African Americans. Their existence is supported solely by Cora's earnings as housekeeper in the household of socially driven Lizbeth Studevant. Tested early in life by the death of her daughter, Cora transfers her maternal love to the Studevants' daughter, Jessie, whose own mother is unable to demonstrate affection for her child. When Jessie dies as a result of a tragic lapse in judgment by her mother, Cora's devotion to the girl empowers her to speak the truth to the town -- regardless of the cost. Mr. and Mrs. Loving is a 1996 drama television film directed by Richard Friedenberg that aired on Showtime. This drama is based on the true story of an interracial couple whose marriage defied Virginia law in the 1960s. Starring Timothy Hutton ("Leverage") and Lela Rochon ("Any Given Sunday"). Plot: A racially mixed couple (white man and black woman) live in Virginia which violates the state's miscegenation laws. Arrested on the night of their wedding, Richard Loving and Mildred “Bean” Jeter are given the option to either be imprisoned or leave the state. The couple chooses to move to Washington, D.C. The Civil Rights Movement and the fight for their marriage led to their win of the Supreme Court case Loving v. Virginia. Storyline: A moving and uplifting drama about the effects of interracial marriage in the 1960s. Friends since childhood, and loved by both families, this couple are exiled after their wedding and must wage a courageous battle to find their place in America as a loving family. Reception: Lisa D. Horowitz, writing for Variety said, "Director-scripter Richard Friedenberg has fashioned a straightforward tale that doesn’t pull any punches. He’s a better writer than helmer, crafting some fine dialogue. But he’s blessed with an excellent cast, led by the reliably understated Hutton". Scott D. Pierce of Deseret News wrote, "Showtime doesn't make a lot of movies worth watching, but Mr. and Mrs. Loving is an exception." Trivia: Based on the true story that led the Supreme Court to declare unconstitutional Virginia's anti-miscegenation law (in Loving v. Virginia, 1967), paving the way for legal interracial marriages. The Planet of Junior Brown, retitled Junior's Groove in some releases, is a 1997 Canadian drama film. Directed by Clement Virgo, the film was written by Virgo and Cameron Bailey as an adaptation of Virginia Hamilton's 1971 novel The Planet of Junior Brown. The adaptation changes the novels setting from 1970s Harlem to 1997 Toronto, where Virgo grew up. The film stars Martin Villafana as the titular Junior Brown, an overweight and schizophrenic child prodigy studying piano from music teacher Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder). The film's cast also includes Lynn Whitfield. Plot: Obese teen misfit Junior Brown (Martin Villafana) is a whiz on the piano but is blocked from following his musical aspirations by his controlling mother, Mrs. Brown (Lynn Whitfield), and his selfish piano teacher, Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder), who is stifling his development. Luckily, Junior manages to get support from his friends and fellow outcasts, including troubled kid Buddy (Rainbow Sun Francks), oddball custodian Mr. Pool (Clark Johnson) and intriguing teen girl Butter (Sarah Polley). Storyline: The Planet of Junior Brown tells the story of an overweight yet gifted young piano prodigy navigating his own fragile world, surrounded by homeless youths who refer to their lives and where they live as their individual planets. Set in 1997 Toronto, the narrative explores themes of isolation, friendship, and resilience, as Junior contends with his protective mother, eccentric teacher, and challenging environment... until, like real planets when other bodies get too close, he finds himself pulled and moved in a different direction. The film is noted for strong performances, particularly Lynn Whitfield’s award-winning role, and has been praised for its emotional depth and nuanced character portrayal. Tagline: Passion Moves Mountains The film premiered at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 1997, but was distributed primarily as a CBC Television film airing in November of that year. The film aired on Showtime and Fox Family Channel in the United States in 1999, following which Whitfield won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children's Series or Special in 2000.
