Kings of Horror presents: The Circle Josh’s beloved Grandpa Joe has passed on... and they never even got to say goodbye. So, Josh’s wife, Lori plans to do a séance as part of his upcoming surprise birthday party. Despite a stern warning not to hold such a ritual during a birthday celebration, Lori invites Ina, a spiritual medium, to attend the party and conduct the séance. When family and friends gather in the circle to make contact, long held secrets are revealed as Grandpa Joe leads Josh to the discovery of a Masonic ring hidden in the basement. The second gathering of the circle summons the spirit of Joe’s Masonic brother, Patrick, who levels harsh accusations against Josh’s grandfather, casting aspersions on him. This provokes Josh’s skeptical friend, Kurt to abruptly exit the séance, thereby breaking the circle and inviting an evil entity to take up residence in the house. After a series of supernatural disturbances, the circle congregates one last time to attempt to exorcise the malevolent presence and lay it to rest... but can the door, once opened between our reality and the spiritual realm, ever be closed again? Home of the Brave is a 1949 American war drama film that explores racial prejudice in the U.S. military through the story of a Black soldier traumatized by combat. It is based on a 1945 play of the same name by Arthur Laurents. It was directed by Mark Robson, and stars Douglas Dick, Jeff Corey, Lloyd Bridges, Frank Lovejoy, James Edwards, and Steve Brodie. The original play featured the protagonist being Jewish, rather than black. The National Board of Review named the film the eighth best of 1949. The film takes its name from the last line of the "Star Spangled Banner" "And the home of the brave?" Home of the Brave managed to combine three of the top film genres of 1949: the war film, the psychological drama, and the problems of African Americans. The film utilizes the recurrent theme of a diverse group of men being subjected to the horror of war and their individual reactions, in this case, to the hell of jungle combat against the Japanese in World War II. Production: When Laurents sold the rights to the play to Hollywood, he was told that the lead character would be turned from Jewish into black because "Jews have been done". Overview: Home of the Brave follows a Black WWII soldier on a perilous reconnaissance mission with an all-white squad, confronting both the dangers of combat and the corrosive effects of racism. Blending war drama with psychological depth, it offers a tense, character-driven story acclaimed for its honest portrayal of prejudice. Praised for performances, particularly James Edwards, it remains a pioneering and socially significant classic worth watching. Storyline: A sensitive, educated black man's World War II-time problems. This is essentially the duplicate of his peace-time problems which are pointed up in a flashback of his life, and primarily of his war-time adventures with four white soldiers on a dangerous reconnaissance mission on a Japanese-held island. Summary: Reviewers say 'Home of the Brave' delivers outstanding performances, particularly from James Edwards and Lloyd Bridges, in a groundbreaking examination of military racism that remains powerfully relevant today. The film's psychological depth and emotional weight create a thought-provoking experience that challenges audiences to confront prejudice. Most praise Carl Foreman's hard-hitting screenplay. Despite being a landmark film, some lament its relative obscurity. In 1959, famed stand-up comedian and social critic Lenny Bruce, as part of a monologue on The Steve Allen Show, criticized Hollywood for its exploitation of race relations just for the sake of profit and without really saying anything, but he singled out Home of the Brave as being a good picture that touched on racial issues that were important. Cane River is a 1982 American romantic drama independent film that was lost until its rediscovery in 2013 and its subsequent re-release in 2018 and beyond. It was written, produced, and directed by Horace B. Jenkins. The film features the lives of African Americans in the US state of Louisiana. While the film premiered in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1982, Horace Jenkins died before the film could be released in New York City and beyond. The film was considered lost until a negative was recovered in 2013. Following its re-release, Cane River received critical acclaim. Highly rated on Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, it was lauded for its exploration of racial history and blending romance with political undertones. Despite some noted technical limitations, critics highlighted its pioneering portrayal of black experiences and its significance in American cinema. Storyline: Written, produced, and directed by the late Emmy Award-winning Horace B. Jenkins, financed by the prominent New Orleans' Rhodes family, and crafted by an entirely African American cast and crew - CANE RIVER is a historically informed love story set in Louisiana's Natchitoches Parish, a "free community of color." Aspiring writer and hopeless romantic Peter - former athlete and scion of an elite Creole family - returns to his hometown and immediately falls for a breathtaking historical tour guide, Maria. Maria's disenfranchised, darker-skinned family disapprove of Peter's family and condemn their burgeoning romance while highlighting the painful legacy of colorism in their tightly-knit community. The lovers must work through Peter's contentious family legacy as privileged, former slave-owning, light-skinned Creoles if they want their romance to survive. Synopsis: The New Orleans Film Society described the film, "Cane River is set near Natchitoches, in one of the first 'free communities of color.' Richard Romain plays Peter Metoyer, home to fight for his land, and Tommye Myrick plays the headstrong Maria Mathis, reluctant to succumb to his charms just because he's the scion of a famous family. Together they confront schisms of class, color and complexion within the black community that threaten to keep them apart and that still roil America today." Themes: Cane River delves into the intricacies of independence and the burdens of personal and collective history. A significant focus is placed on racial identities, emphasizing the interplay between race, complexion, class and societal structure. The economic disparities prevalent in society are not left unaddressed, along with the legacy of Black American history. The story also touches upon the nuances of forbidden romance, and the web of relationships that individuals navigate through. History, both personal and cultural, especially as it pertains to Louisiana, is a recurring theme, The film sheds light on the importance of personal and collective identity, intellect, and the significance of one's roots. Racial complexities and the trauma of slavery are meticulously explored, further delving into the caste systems that still have remnants in society. Themes of love are omnipresent, intertwined with land ownership and its implications. In Part 1: A historic space launch triggers a solar-storm event that could have cataclysmic repercussions for the planet if it isn’t stopped in time—and time is running out. The world watches in awe as the;Roebling;Clipper is launched into space. Using state-of-the-art scalar engines to fly around the Moon and back in just hours, the maiden voyage of the first-ever trans-lunar passenger ship is about to make history. Among those on board: First Lady Simone Mathany, space-exploration entrepreneur Steve Roebling, Dr. Denise Balaban, pilot Fiona Henslaw, and a very lucky lottery winner. But while en route, a massive solar flare sparks a cosmic-ray burst that accelerates Aurora’s engine and blows the ship away from Earth’s orbit. Now out of control, it’s hurtling straight for the sun. At Mission Control, along with the desperate President Thomas Mathany, an increasingly anxious team of experts puts a plan into motion—an interception by a shuttle attached to the International Space Station. When that ends in disaster, the Aurora only picks up speed. Now being pulled toward the sun at three percent of the speed of light, it’s only a matter of hours before it burns. With that, the scalar engine will trigger cosmic ray bursts, and a giant electromagnetic pulse storm that will blow Earth back into the Stone Age. Now, preparing for the inevitable seems the last—and only—terrifying option. A combination of scientific reality, intense human drama, and state-of-the-art special effects, EXPLODING SUN is a new-wave disaster miniseries of epic proportions.
