The Ernest Green Story is a 1993 American made-for-television biographical film which follows the true story of Ernest Green (Morris Chestnut) and eight other African American high-school students (dubbed the "Little Rock Nine") as they embark on their historic journey to integrate Little Rock Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1957. The film was developed and executive produced by Carol Ann Abrams. Much of the movie was filmed on location at Central High School. The film had its world premiere at Little Rock Central High School, with an introduction by President-Elect of the United States Bill Clinton. It aired on the Disney Channel on January 17, 1993. Later that year, A.M.L. Productions and the Disney Channel received a Peabody Award for presenting "a story which reminds adults and teaches children about the courageous steps taken toward the elimination of discrimination in American society". Reception: The movie generally gained positive reception from viewers. It is often shown in schools to teach students about the Little Rock Nine. In an interview given by young reporters from Arkansas, Ernest Green explained that the movie portrayed his year at Central High very accurately, highlighting the highs and lows of that year and bringing to light the most challenging and triumphant parts. Devil in a Blue Dress is a 1995 American neo-noir mystery thriller film written and directed by Carl Franklin, based on Walter Mosley's 1990 novel of the same name and features Denzel Washington, Tom Sizemore, Jennifer Beals, and Don Cheadle. Set in 1948, the film follows World War II veteran Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins who, desperate in need of a job, becomes drawn into a search for a mysterious woman. Devil in a Blue Dress received positive reviews, with many praising Cheadle's performance. Plot: A Black war hero is hired to find a mysterious woman and gets mixed up in a murderous political scandal in 1948 Los Angeles. Storyline: It is 1948 in LA and Ezekiel "Easy" Rawlins, an African-American World War II veteran, is looking for work. At his friend's bar, he is introduced to a white man, DeWitt Albright, who is looking for someone to help him find a missing white woman assumed to be hiding somewhere in LA's Black community. This woman, Daphne Monet, happens to be the fiancée of a wealthy "blue blood," Todd Carter, who is currently the favorite in the city's mayoralty race. Daphne Monet is known to frequent the Black jazz clubs in LA. Easy, innocently, accepts Albright's offer; however, he quickly finds himself amidst murder, crooked cops, ruthless politicians, and brutalizing hoodlums. This is a Chandler-esque "who-done-it" with an African-American theme. Synopsis: The bone-deep disillusionment of postwar film noir becomes a powerful vehicle to explore America’s racial injustices in Carl Franklin’s richly atmospheric Devil in a Blue Dress, an adaptation of the hard-boiled novel by Walter Mosley. Denzel Washington has charisma to burn as the jobless ex-GI Easy Rawlins, who sees a chance to make some quick cash when he’s recruited to find the missing lover (Jennifer Beals) of a wealthy mayoral candidate in late-1940s Los Angeles—only to find himself embroiled in murder, political intrigue, and a scandal that crosses the treacherous color lines of a segregated society. Featuring breakout work by Don Cheadle as Rawlins’s cheerfully trigger-happy sidekick, this stylish mystery both channels and subverts classic noir tropes as it exposes the bitter racial realities underlying the American dream. Tagline: In a world divided by black and white, Easy Rawlins is about to cross the line. We do not own the rights to any of this film. Mississippi Masala is a 1991 romantic drama film directed by Mira Nair, based upon a screenplay by Sooni Taraporevala, starring Denzel Washington, Sarita Choudhury, and Roshan Seth. Set primarily in rural Mississippi, the film explores interracial romance between African Americans and Indian Americans. Storyline: An Indian family is expelled from Uganda when Idi Amin takes power. They move to Mississippi and time passes. The dad sues Uganda to get his property back. The now-adult Indian daughter meets and falls in love with a Black man, and the respective families are forced to come to terms with it in the climate of racial hatred and cultural difference. Synopsis: Demetrius is a stalwart, self-made man and owner of a carpet-cleaning business. A chance traffic accident introduces him to Mina, a beautiful young Indian woman whose family fled Uganda under the rule of Idi Amin. As Demetrius and Mina begin their secret love affair, each is swept into the other's exotic world, soon finding themselves at the center of controversy and scandal. Mina's parents, Jay and his wife Kinnu, are outraged by the relationship and concerned about their daughter's disregard for the values and traditions of their culture. Demetrius, it seems, fares no better. The Indian community is outraged, his business suffers, the bank wants to repossess his carpet cleaning van and friends whisper that he has crossed the color line. However, Demetrius stands steadfast in his belief that a shade of color is all which separates him and Mina. Reception: On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 92% of 74 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.6/10. The website's consensus reads: "Sarita Choudhury and Denzel Washington's romantic chemistry lights up the screen in Mississippi Masala, Mira Nair's observant and sexy tale of cultures clashing" We do not own the rights to any of this film. After the enormous success of 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood", studios were hesitant to make Robin Hood films for fear of paling in comparison. Despite a few standalone adventures, this fear was dodged by a series of "son of Robin Hood" pictures, with the Prince of Thieves cast as the older, matured outlaw of days past, with their son the action hero played by a young up-and-comer. 1958's "Son of Robin Hood" introduced the twist that Robin Hood's daughter had come to claim her father's mantle, yet in a horribly predictable manner, a male character became the focus of the film very quickly, the titular son being a rouse. The most recent of the child-of-Robin-Hood films, 2001's "Princess of Thieves" corrects this unfortunate direction, seeing Gwyn, the daughter of Robin Hood and Maid Marian, endeavour to break out of her monotonous life of study and inhabit the action and adventure she's heard so much about in her famous mother's life - despite her father's overprotectiveness, as Marian has since died. With Robin captured by the would-be-King John, Gwyn works to both rescue her father and find the true heir to Richard's kingdom, his son Philip, and place him on the throne. A twist on history, Philip of Cognac was a real, and only, child of Richard, though an illegitimate one who never inherited the crown, of course, much less had a remote chance to do so. But probably worse is the claim that Richard was king in 1184! Henry II would reign until 1189, with Richard only Duke of Aquitaine and Count of Poitiers during this time. Nevertheless, despite the TV-movie aesthetic, "Princess of Thieves" is a charming escape into the imaginary of Robin Hood. All rights to Disney - shared here purely for fun!
