Claudine is a 1974 American romantic comedy-drama film, directed by John Berry. Claudine was written by Lester Pine and Tina Pine, produced by Third World Cinema, and distributed by 20th Century Fox, starring James Earl Jones, Diahann Carroll, and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. The film was released on April 22, 1974, grossing about $6 million, a modest hit for the times. It was praised for showing a new dimension in black cinema during the height of blaxploitation. Synopsis: A single mother of six on welfare and a garbage collector fall in love in 1970s Harlem. Plot: Claudine is a single mother on welfare in New York City who endures an exhausting commute to the suburbs where she works as a maid for wealthy families. In one carefully tended white community, she meets Roop, a charismatic but irresponsible garbage collector. Romance quickly ensues, but Claudine doubts that their relationship is good for her six children, and Rupert, despite his good nature, is reluctant to take on fatherhood. Storyline: Diahann Carroll is radiant in an unforgettable, Oscar-nominated performance as Claudine, a strong-willed single mother, raising six kids in Harlem, whose budding relationship with a gregarious garbage collector (an equally fantastic James Earl Jones) is stressed by the difficulty of getting by in an oppressive system. As directed by the formerly blacklisted leftist filmmaker John Berry, this romantic comedy with a social conscience deftly balances warm humor with a serious look at the myriad issues—from cycles of poverty to the indignities of the welfare system—that shape its characters’ realities. The result is an empathetic chronicle of both Black working-class struggle and Black joy, a bittersweet, bighearted celebration of family and community set to a sunny soul soundtrack composed by Curtis Mayfield and performed by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Cotton Comes to Harlem is a 1970 American neo-noir action comedy film co-written and directed by Ossie Davis and starring Godfrey Cambridge, Raymond St. Jacques, and Redd Foxx. The film, later cited as an early example of the Blaxploitation genre, is based on Chester Himes' novel of the same name. The opening theme, "Ain't Now But It's Gonna Be", was written by Ossie Davis and performed by Melba Moore. The film was one of the many black films that appeared in the 1970s and became overnight hits. It was followed two years later by the sequel Come Back, Charleston Blue (1972). Synopsis: Two Harlem cops investigate a robbery, believing that a reverend has staged it in order to steal the money he's collected for a local fundraiser. Storyline: Gravedigger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson are two black cops with a reputation for breaking the odd head. Both are annoyed at the success of the Reverend Deke O'Mailey who is selling trips back to Africa to the poor on the installment plan. When his truck is hijacked and a bale of cotton stuffed with money is lost in the chase, Harlem is turned upside down by Gravedigger and Coffin Ed, the Reverend, and the hijackers. Hilarity ensues!Much of the humor is urban black, which was unusual in 1970. Production: The film saw the debut of Calvin Lockhart, Judy Pace, and Cleavon Little. Another debut was by Redd Foxx, already well known as a veteran nightclub comic, leading him to be considered for the TV Show Sanford and Son. Themes: Cotton Comes to Harlem is hailed by many as the first blaxploitation film, although others felt that it was merely an action comedy film. Detectives Gravedigger and Coffin Ed do not always follow the rules. They are not necessarily fighting to protect the rule of law, but they try to protect their people from racist attitudes. Reception: Ken Hanke of the Mountain Xpress called Cotton Comes to Harlem "one of the earliest and best Blaxploitation films. Box Office: Cotton Comes to Harlem is one of the most commercially successful films Hollywood produced in the 1970s starring a predominantly black cast. The film was one of the many black films that appeared in the 1970s eventually becoming a cult classic. Cotton Comes to Harlem inspired more black films during the 1970s, including more action-packed numbers such as Shaft and Super Fly. We do not own the rights to any of this film. Get Christie Love! was originally broadcast in January, 1974 as an ABC Movie of the Week, inspired by the 1970s blaxploitation films such as Tamara Dobson's Cleopatra Jones (1973), and Pam Grier's Coffy (1973) and Foxy Brown (1974). The title character had a catchphrase; upon apprehending a criminal, Love would declare, "You're under arrest, Sugah!" The film proved a success and consequently spawned a short-lived television series on the ABC network. Originally aired in the mid-70s, at the height of 'blaxploitation', this was American television's attempt to capitalize on the genre. It featured Teresa Graves as Ms. Love, an LAPD officer, known for her catchphrase; 'freeze, sugar'. Synopsis: Teresa Graves stars as a shapely sleuth in this 70s flick. Action scenes abound as the female police detective tries to get the goods on a huge drug empire. She's one bad mama! Storyline: Christie Love is a beautiful, charming Black woman who also happens to be a skilled undercover operative with the Los Angeles Police Department. The Planet of Junior Brown, retitled Junior's Groove in some releases, is a 1997 Canadian drama film. Directed by Clement Virgo, the film was written by Virgo and Cameron Bailey as an adaptation of Virginia Hamilton's 1971 novel The Planet of Junior Brown. The adaptation changes the novels setting from 1970s Harlem to 1997 Toronto, where Virgo grew up. The film stars Martin Villafana as the titular Junior Brown, an overweight and schizophrenic child prodigy studying piano from music teacher Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder). The film's cast also includes Lynn Whitfield. Plot: Obese teen misfit Junior Brown (Martin Villafana) is a whiz on the piano but is blocked from following his musical aspirations by his controlling mother, Mrs. Brown (Lynn Whitfield), and his selfish piano teacher, Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder), who is stifling his development. Luckily, Junior manages to get support from his friends and fellow outcasts, including troubled kid Buddy (Rainbow Sun Francks), oddball custodian Mr. Pool (Clark Johnson) and intriguing teen girl Butter (Sarah Polley). Storyline: The Planet of Junior Brown tells the story of an overweight yet gifted young piano prodigy navigating his own fragile world, surrounded by homeless youths who refer to their lives and where they live as their individual planets. Set in 1997 Toronto, the narrative explores themes of isolation, friendship, and resilience, as Junior contends with his protective mother, eccentric teacher, and challenging environment... until, like real planets when other bodies get too close, he finds himself pulled and moved in a different direction. The film is noted for strong performances, particularly Lynn Whitfield’s award-winning role, and has been praised for its emotional depth and nuanced character portrayal. Tagline: Passion Moves Mountains The film premiered at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 1997, but was distributed primarily as a CBC Television film airing in November of that year. The Old Settler is a 2001 television drama film that is an adaptation of John Henry Redwood's play of the same name. Real life sisters Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen share their on-and-off stage charm in this production of The Old Settler, a powerful mix of comedy and drama set in Harlem during the 1940s. The Old Settler is directed by Debbie Allen. Quilly (Debbie Allen) has separated from her husband and has moved in with her unwed sister Elizabeth (Phylicia Rashad), an "old settler" (forties slang for a middle-aged woman with no marriage prospects). Quilly is dismayed that her sister has rented a room in their apartment to a handsome young man named Husband Witherspoon (Bumper Robinson) who has traveled from South Carolina in search of his sweetheart Lou Bessie (Crystal Fox).
