A Gathering of Old Men is a 1987 American-German television drama film directed by Volker Schlöndorff and based on the novel of the same name. It was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival. The film was released as television film in the US. For his performance actor Louis Gossett Jr. was nominated at the Emmy Awards for "Outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or a special". Plot: A bigoted white farmer is shot in self-defense on a Louisiana sugarcane plantation. A group of old black men come forward en masse to take responsibility for the killing. As the sheriff confronts the suspects, the young plantation owner stands firm in her daring defense of the old men, provoking racial tension that makes a compelling drama. Reception: Mark Schwed, in his article published in the Winston-Salem Journal, said he liked it. He noted that the director "does a beautiful job of capturing the feeling of the people the place and the time as it was framed in the novel by Ernest J Gaines." Ron Weiskind in his review published in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette thought it was stirring and thoughtful. He wrote that "the film's laconic pace seems oddly casual and desultory at first. But "Gathering" slowly peels away at scabs of anger and hurt and prejudice to reveal the effects racism has had on its characters and, by extension, on the rest of us." Of the cast he said "this gathering of old men is filled with talent." We do not own the rights to any of this film. This film is being used for historical and educational purposes only. The Planet of Junior Brown, retitled Junior's Groove in some releases, is a 1997 Canadian drama film. Directed by Clement Virgo, the film was written by Virgo and Cameron Bailey as an adaptation of Virginia Hamilton's 1971 novel The Planet of Junior Brown. The adaptation changes the novels setting from 1970s Harlem to 1997 Toronto, where Virgo grew up. The film stars Martin Villafana as the titular Junior Brown, an overweight and schizophrenic child prodigy studying piano from music teacher Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder). The film's cast also includes Lynn Whitfield. Plot: Obese teen misfit Junior Brown (Martin Villafana) is a whiz on the piano but is blocked from following his musical aspirations by his controlling mother, Mrs. Brown (Lynn Whitfield), and his selfish piano teacher, Miss Peebs (Margot Kidder), who is stifling his development. Luckily, Junior manages to get support from his friends and fellow outcasts, including troubled kid Buddy (Rainbow Sun Francks), oddball custodian Mr. Pool (Clark Johnson) and intriguing teen girl Butter (Sarah Polley). Storyline: The Planet of Junior Brown tells the story of an overweight yet gifted young piano prodigy navigating his own fragile world, surrounded by homeless youths who refer to their lives and where they live as their individual planets. Set in 1997 Toronto, the narrative explores themes of isolation, friendship, and resilience, as Junior contends with his protective mother, eccentric teacher, and challenging environment... until, like real planets when other bodies get too close, he finds himself pulled and moved in a different direction. The film is noted for strong performances, particularly Lynn Whitfield’s award-winning role, and has been praised for its emotional depth and nuanced character portrayal. Tagline: Passion Moves Mountains The film premiered at the 1997 Toronto International Film Festival on September 6, 1997, but was distributed primarily as a CBC Television film airing in November of that year. The film aired on Showtime and Fox Family Channel in the United States in 1999, following which Whitfield won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Performance in a Youth/Children's Series or Special in 2000. Once Upon a Time... When We Were Colored is a 1996 American period drama film directed by Tim Reid and starring Al Freeman Jr., Phylicia Rashad and Leon. The screenplay was written by Paul W. Cooper. The film is based on Clifton Taulbert’s real life and his non-fiction book Once Upon a Time When We Were Colored. Based on Clifton Taulbert's memoir first published in 1989; this film is about his life experiences from his childhood in a small Mississippi town during the segregated 1950s to his emigration North in 1962 at the age of 17. Synopsis: A narrator tells the story of his childhood years in a tightly knit African American community in the deep south under racial segregation. Welcome to Glen Allan, Mississippi, 1946. Experience an America that remains only in the hearts and minds of those who were brought up in this small southern community. Lost in the sweat of the cotton fields and hidden in the juke joints of muddy water blues, the people of Glen Allan nurtured and protected each other while celebrating life to the fullest. In a time when the Ku Klux Klan terrorized the streets and "White Only" were the first words learned by African American children, Clifton was encouraged by the love and kinship of the tight-knit community to overcome the bigotry and intolerance of the South, allowing him to embark on an extraordinary journey. Quotes: Narrator: Everyone clung to the idea that if you worked hard, you get a piece of the American dream. Reception: Roger Ebert gave the movie four stars of four. At the 1997 NAACP Image Awards film received two nominations: for Outstanding Motion Picture, and Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture (Phylicia Rashad). It also received American Black Film Festival Award for Best Film. The video has poor picture quality, but it is still a worthwhile viewing experience. We do not own the rights to any of this film.
