"A Dream for Christmas" is a TV movie which originally aired on television on December 24, 1973. It was originally designed as the pilot for a never-sold TV series titled The Douglas Family. Synopsis: An all-black cast shines in this pilot for a proposed series involving a southern minister who is assigned to a poor parish in California with the congregation drifting away and the church scheduled for demolition. But it's close to Christmas, a time when miracles have been known to happen. The hope here was for writer Earl Hamner to repeat his success with "The Waltons." Plot: An African-American minister, the Rev. Will Douglas (Hari Rhodes), and his large family relocate from their Arkansas home to Los Angeles in the 1950s. Douglas has been hired to lead the congregation of a neighborhood church. But, when the family finally arrives, they discover that the church is in major disrepair and scheduled for demolition. Douglas; his wife, Sarah (Lynn Hamilton) ; Grandma (Beah Richards) ; and the children must come together as various hardships rock their household. Review: Good Family Entertainment! I hadn't heard of this made for TV movie before it aired on the Me TV channel during the holidays. While it's not a classic in its field, it does prove to be a pleasurable watch. It's interesting that the entire cast is made up of African-Americans, and equally interesting that these characters and experiences have been almost totally written to be universal regardless of what your ethnicity might be. And while the central character is a preacher struggling to keep his church alive, the movie wisely doesn't lay on the religion thick - his words and actions are also universal to all viewers regardless of what your religion might be. Claudine is a 1974 American romantic comedy-drama film, directed by John Berry. Claudine was written by Lester Pine and Tina Pine, produced by Third World Cinema, and distributed by 20th Century Fox, starring James Earl Jones, Diahann Carroll, and Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs. The film was released on April 22, 1974, grossing about $6 million, a modest hit for the times. It was praised for showing a new dimension in black cinema during the height of blaxploitation. Synopsis: A single mother of six on welfare and a garbage collector fall in love in 1970s Harlem. Plot: Claudine is a single mother on welfare in New York City who endures an exhausting commute to the suburbs where she works as a maid for wealthy families. In one carefully tended white community, she meets Roop, a charismatic but irresponsible garbage collector. Romance quickly ensues, but Claudine doubts that their relationship is good for her six children, and Rupert, despite his good nature, is reluctant to take on fatherhood. Storyline: Diahann Carroll is radiant in an unforgettable, Oscar-nominated performance as Claudine, a strong-willed single mother, raising six kids in Harlem, whose budding relationship with a gregarious garbage collector (an equally fantastic James Earl Jones) is stressed by the difficulty of getting by in an oppressive system. As directed by the formerly blacklisted leftist filmmaker John Berry, this romantic comedy with a social conscience deftly balances warm humor with a serious look at the myriad issues—from cycles of poverty to the indignities of the welfare system—that shape its characters’ realities. The result is an empathetic chronicle of both Black working-class struggle and Black joy, a bittersweet, bighearted celebration of family and community set to a sunny soul soundtrack composed by Curtis Mayfield and performed by Gladys Knight & the Pips. Directed by George Stevens Jr., the miniseries received critical acclaim for its performances and historical accuracy, highlighting the moral and legal complexities of the case. In 1991, the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences rewarded the film with the Outstanding Miniseries award. Synopsis: A dramatization of the American court case that destroyed the legal validity of racial segregation. This was the struggle that would destroy the legal validity for racial segregation in general and prove to be the start and the first major victory of the civil rights movement. Tagline: The true story behind the most important legal battle of our time. Critical Reception: John Leonard called the film "splendid" and "a triumph" in New York Magazine. While generally praising the film, Richard Zoglin in Time Magazine called the portrayal of Warren's visit to Gettysburg "simplistic." Freedom Song is a 2000 biographical made-for-television drama film based on true stories of the Civil Rights Movement in Mississippi in the 1960s. It tells the story of the struggle of African Americans to register to vote in the fictional town of Quinlan. In the midst of the Freedom Summer, a group of high school students in the small town are eager to make grassroots changes in their own community. The young activists meet resistance not only from white southerners, but from their parents, who have experienced firsthand the violence that can result from speaking out. As high school students band together with the support of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, they make strides in registering African American voters and gaining awareness for their cause. The film was made for television and released on February 27, 2000, on the TNT TV channel in the United States. It was written and directed by Phil Alden Robinson and co-written by Stanley Weiser. Winner of the Image Award, Writers Guild of America award, and Golden Gate Award, it stars Danny Glover, Vicellous Reon Shannon, and Vondie Curtis-Hall. Storyline: A tale about a young man's struggle for equality and justice and basic American rights in 1960s Mississippi and the harrowing ordeals people wanting the same opportunities endured, before Blacks were allowed to vote, and when they did sit-ins at White establishments. The young man, Owen (Vicellous Reon Shannon), is at odds with his father Will (Danny Glover) who is afraid his son's anti-segregation activities will jeopardize the family's livelihood and safety. Review: "Freedom Song" is a surprising, powerful, emotional, sometimes funny, always honest look at the civil rights movement. This is a wonderfully told story. It focuses mostly on teenagers, and it's fascinating. This film is an impressive re-telling of how the non-violent emphasis within that movement led to its eventual success. Carole King's "Song of Freedom" is a great anthem for the film. America is a deeply racist nation, so unsurprisingly there is a lot of bigotry in this movie. Everyone should have a right to vote. No matter what race or ethnic group. America was based on freedom and liberty at its founding, but white Americans didn't extend that same freedom and liberty to the hundreds of thousands of black people they held in slavery. I live in Alabama and right now in May 2026 white people are doing their very best to diminish the power of the black vote and deny African Americans political representation in Alabama and across the South. In May 1963, Birmingham, Alabama became infamous for its use of fire hoses and police dogs on marching African American students during the civil rights protests against segregation. Black people were beaten bloody in Selma, Alabama in 1965 simply for marching for the right to vote. The Supreme Court has dismantled the ensuing Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 2026 in Montgomery, Alabama, the site of the 1955-56 Bus Boycott, 70 years later, amid protests, flooding and evacuations, the Alabama Legislature passed special election bills that produce a racial gerrymander. The struggle continues... We do not own the rights to any of this film. This film is being used for historical and educational purposes only. No copyright infringement intended. Black Excellence:

Hollow Image is a 1979 made for TV drama film that focuses on Harriet Gittens (Saundra Sharp), a black businesswoman who works in the fashion industry as a buyer. Harriet's pursuit of success has taken her far from her Harlem background and past connections there--including ex-boyfriend Danny. Harriet suddenly finds herself torn between her current life "uptown" (glamorous career, fancy NY apartment, lawyer boyfriend) and the life she left behind. A refreshing departure from 70's Blaxploitation fare, Hollow Image is still relevant today. The cast is uniformly excellent, with standout performances from Hattie Winston (Harriet's sassy cousin Ivy), Anna Maria Horsford (Danny's girlfriend who does NOT want Harriet back in the picture), and Morgan Freeman (Sweet Talk who was once a ladies' man, now a junkie.) Plot: A black woman who has left her Harlem roots behind to find success on a white corporate ladder must come to terms with the survivor's guilt she feels when she returns home for a visit. Storyline: A Black New York career girl who has made it big in the fashion world is torn between her new life "downtown" and her roots in Harlem with an old boyfriend still living there. This ABC Theater movie was made at the tail end of the 70's and you can feel the consumerist 80's creeping in; bougie depictions of Black success are contrasted with a portrait of Harlem as a scary place ruined with drugs and crime. The drama is compelling and studded with luminaries like Anna Maria Horsford, Morgan Freeman, Dick Anthony Williams and Hattie Winston. But while the class politics and nuances of the situations shown feel remarkably rare and candid, the film is very careful to avoid laying any blame at the feet of capitalism, racist policing, the drug war, government policies, white supremacy, wealth inequality or anything that might cause white viewers discomfort. It never quite rises above the specifically American myths we are fed when the rare escapees of poverty are waved in everyone's face as proof that anyone can be so fortunate. It also suffers from some colorism in the casting. We do not own the rights to any of this film. This film is being used for historical and educational purposes only. Olivia Rodrigo - pretty isn’t pretty | Vevo Official Live Performance Only superlatives come to mind when trying to sum up Olivia Rodrigo’s last few years. Her impactful debut ballad ‘drivers license’ goes hand in hand with words such as “most” and “best”: most streams on Spotify in a single day and week, Top 100 most-streamed songs on the platform, the Best Pop Solo Performance award at that year’s GRAMMYs. That the teen sensation could follow the “drivers license” craze with “good 4 u,” “deja vu,” and ultimately her debut album ‘SOUR’ - all now equally beloved - was the first sign that the pop world had a rarified capital S Superstar on its hands. You can forget about that dreaded sophomore slump, too. Thanks in part to her trusty producer sidekick Dan Nigro, ‘GUTS’ elevates all the ingredients that really popped in ’SOUR,’ the 90s slacker rock guitar arrangements and riffs, the theater-kid earnestness, the talkative asides. There’s one key thematic difference. “Lots of the new songs are about growing up rather than breakups,” Olivia proudly stated recently. When we linked up with her at LA's Million Dollar Theater, not only had her wattage grown brighter, her command of the stage and camera were somehow even stronger than before. Speaking of growing up, "pretty isn't pretty" takes aim the not-so-nice social pressures one faces as the spotlight grows brighter, especially women. Another gut punch delivered on a platter of angsty pop-rock perfection.
