No Way Out is a 1950 American crime drama film noir directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz and starring Sidney Poitier in his film debut, alongside Richard Widmark, Linda Darnell and Stephen McNally. The film centers on an African American doctor who confronts the racism of a poor slum after he treats a racist white criminal. Nominated for the 1950 Oscar for Best Writing, Story and Screenplay, this intense drama about racial hatred pulls no punches. One of the first Hollywood films to directly address racism. No Way Out was controversial in its "graphic representation of racial violence" in what director Mankiewicz termed "the absolute blood and guts of Negro hating." The film marked the feature-acting debuts of Poitier, Mildred Joanne Smith, and Ossie Davis. Richard Widmark delivers one of his most chilling roles. Mankiewicz and Lesser Samuels were nominated for Best Story and Screenplay at the 23rd Academy Awards. It is a gripping film noir and Sidney Poitier’s powerful debut, following a Black doctor whose treatment of an injured white criminal sparks intense racial tension in a working-class community. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, it blends crime drama and social commentary, tackling racism with rare candor for its era. Praised for Poitier’s commanding performance and the film’s boldness, it remains a powerful, unsettling classic worth watching for its historical and cinematic impact. Released during the early days of the Civil Rights Movement, No Way Out received critical acclaim but faced censorship for many years due to its incendiary nature. Storyline: The Biddle brothers, shot while robbing a gas station, are taken to the prison ward of the County Hospital; Ray Biddle, a rabid racist, wants no treatment from black resident Dr. Luther Brooks. When brother John dies while Luther tries to save him, Ray is certain it's murder and becomes obsessed with vengeance and the situation slides rapidly toward violence. Trivia: Richard Widmark was apparently very uncomfortable with some of the racist comments his character, Ray Biddle, made, especially given his friendship with Sidney Poitier. As a result, after some of the takes involving particularly venomous remarks, Widmark apologized to Poitier. We do not own the rights to any of this film. The Bus Is Coming (also known as Ghetto Revenge) is a 1971 American drama film written by Horace Jackson. The film is directed by Wendell James Franklin and stars Mike B. Simms and Burl Bullock. Let's get in a time machine my soul brothers and sisters and take a trip back in time for an early 1970s "blaxploitation" flick. Can you dig it! Storyline: In Center City, bus service has been discontinued because of increased violence in the predominately black community. Most recently, Joe Mitchell, a black, non-violent civil rights leader was killed in his own home by an unknown assailant with no apparent motive. A young black soldier returns home to Los Angeles from combat in Vietnam to find out that his brother had been killed and uncovers a gang of racist cops. Angered, he joins a black nationalist group to take his revenge. Synopsis: Abruptly summoned back to his old Watts neighborhood while serving his tour of duty in Vietnam, young black soldier Mike Simm investigates his brother's recent death and discovers a gang of racist cops and becomes the unlikely voice of moderation between the enraged black militants who want to riot in the streets, and the violent white extremists who are just itching for a race war. Plot: The film is about the death of a prominent Black community member Joe Mitchell, who served on the school board. "The Black Fist," a local black power political organization wants to hold a rally in response to Mitchell's death because the "town must pay it's dues". Billy Mitchell, Joe's brother returns from the Vietnam War and investigates Joe's death. He becomes aware of a gang of racist cops and eventually joins The Black Fist group to seek revenge. Tagline: The MAN Can't Stop It! Don't Miss It! Trivia: Quentin Tarantino remembers seeing this at 8 years old, along with a Jim Brown film as a double feature, and laughing at the African American audience yelling back at the screen. The Landlord is a 1970 American comedy-drama film directed by Hal Ashby, adapted by Bill Gunn from the 1966 novel by Kristin Hunter. The film stars Beau Bridges in the lead role of a privileged and ignorant white man who selfishly becomes the landlord of an inner-city tenement, intending to evict the occupants, unaware that the people he is responsible for are low-income, streetwise residents. Also in the cast are Lee Grant, Diana Sands, Pearl Bailey, and Louis Gossett Jr. The film was Ashby's directorial debut. Plot: Naïve 29-year-old Elgar Enders buys a building in a black Brooklyn ghetto to evict the tenants and upgrade it. But instead, he grows fond of the tenants, especially a black woman married to a black radical, and falls in love with a mixed-race girl while his wealthy parents disapprove. Storyline: Elgar Enders, who lives off an allowance from his wealthy parents, buys an inner-city tenement in Park Slope, Brooklyn, which is undergoing gentrification, planning to evict the occupants and construct a luxury home for himself. (A one-man urban renewal project). However, once he ventures into the tenement, he grows fond of the low-income black residents. Enders decides to remain the landlord and help fix the building. He rebels against his WASP upbringing and, to his parents' dismay, romances a black woman and a biracial woman. Trivia: Charlie Murphy, older brother of Eddie Murphy, lived in the neighborhood where the film was shot, and he appears in a brief scene as a boy stealing Elgar's hubcaps. Historical Context: In the early seventies, Hollywood studio executives began to realize there was a huge untapped market for films dealing with Afro-Americans - a situation made obvious by the unexpected success of Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970), an action-comedy film. In the ensuing rush to capture this previously ignored audience, the "blaxploitation" film was born, but the majority of these films were urban crime thrillers like Shaft (1971) and Superfly (1972). Films which attempted to explore racial issues or feature complicated black and white relationships were a rarity, but one unique exception was The Landlord (1970), which was virtually ignored by the public when it opened. Critical Reaction: The film garnered mostly positive reviews from critics. On Rotten Tomatoes, it has received a 93% overall approval rating from 14 critics. Upon its release, New York Times film critic Howard Thompson, called the film "a wondrously wise, sad and hilarious comedy." On September 19, 2007, journalist Mike Hale discussed the film in a New York Times article called "Before Gentrification Was Cool, It Was a Movie". Hale praised the film for tackling the racial tension that arose in the aftermath of the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. and wrote in surprise how the film "would disappear after its 1970 release – rarely shown and just as rarely discussed."
